Art of Shaving new shaving cream formulations.

I stopped today at the new AoS store in Utah and I did noticed that the shaving creams have suffered a new re formulation.It seems that the sandalwood one has now fragance instead of esential oils and have introduce the Palmitic and Lauric Acid in the ingredient list.


I did take pics but are so crappy that Ill rather write the new formulations:


-Unscented shaving cream:


Aqua (Water),Stearic Acid,Myristic Acid,Pottasium Hidroxide,Glycerin,Coconut Acid,Triethalonamine,Sodium Hydroxide,Palmitic Acid,Methylparaben,Lauric Acid,Prophylparaben,Diethalomamine.


-Sandalwood shaving crea:


Aqua (Water),Stearic Acid,Myristic Acid,Pottasium Hidroxide,Glycerin,Coconut Acid,fragance,Triethalonamine,Sodium Hydroxide,Palmitic Acid,Methylparaben,Lauric Acid,Prophylparaben,Diethalomamine.


-Lemon shaving cream:


Aqua (Water),Stearic Acid,Myristic Acid,Pottasium Hidroxide,Glycerin,Coconut Acid,Citrus (Lemon) peel oil,Triethalonamine,Sodium Hydroxide,Palmitic Acid,Methylparaben,Lauric Acid,Prophylparaben,Diethalomamine.


-Lavender shaving cream (lavanda):


Aqua (Water),Stearic Acid,Myristic Acid,Pottasium Hidroxide,Glycerin,Coconut Acid,Lavandula Angustifolia (lavender oil)
,Triethalonamine,Sodium Hydroxide,Palmitic Acid,Methylparaben,Lauric Acid,Prophylparaben,Diethalomamine.

The creams are still made in England,but now have a thicker consistency and the sandalwood one has a weaker scent,or maybe it was just me.


The soaps are still made with tallow and in Italy (thank goodness)

well with the decrease in quality, i hope they decreased the price....sad day.

I use Myristic acid to get the gunk off my wrenches.

I really like my AOS Sandalwood and Lemon ShaveCreams with the essential oils in them.

Now that Proctor&Gamble have destroyed the heart of the creams, I will surely not repurchase once my 2 tubs are used up !

I stopped using them recently anyway, even though I had some pre-P&G shave cream, since they use parabens and methylparabens; I found this among other things:
Parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen, which is known to play a role in the development of breast cancers. Do you really want to take the chance that they might do so? In the July 2002 issue of the Archives of Toxicology, Dr. S. Oishi of the Department of Toxicology, Tokyo Metropolitan Research Laboratory of Public Health reported that exposure of newborn male mammals to butylparaben “adversely affects the secretion of testosterone and the function of the male reproductive system.”
Granted, this was a report about newborns, but there are so many questionable additives in everything we use, I'm trying to take fewer chances when I can...not saying everyone should react the same way, it's just my personal choice..and it IS sad to see AOS go down the corporate tubes.

We have some young soap makers in my area that are making natural soaps ; seahagsoaps.com . They are making a camp soap that's used for shaving. Comes in various scents. You might want to look at their website.

I don't see much difference in the basic formula. Comparing the Lavender cream versions, the only differences are the removal of two of the acid components: Lauric Acid and Palmitic Acid. They're probably worth having in there, so if they play an important role in the performance of the the cream then that would be disappointing.

The replacement of the Sandalwood essential oils with an unspecified fragrance however is definitely disappointing.

Actually, I use unscented soaps because even EOs can irritate my skin. In fact my order of AOS Unscented cream just arrived today, so I guess it's time to see first hand if the performance has been degraded.

Has anyone actually tried the reformulated version to judge its performance rather than judging the ingredient list?

Short report on the new unscented cream - I used it this morning and it lathered up well. It seemed to have the same amount of cushion and glide as my last jar. It actually seemed to dry more slowly, which is notable because here in Southern California we've been having high winds and very dry air for the last couple of days.

Very sad indeed i will check this out here i am heading that way this evening. I always like the EO's so i will probably be changing as well once my last tube runs out...


Just got back and I agree it is a way weaker smell, it is sad that was one of my favorite parts of using the sandalwood.

I will cherish my current 2 still rather new AOS Sandalwood & Lemon ShaveCreams with EO, and not buy the new AOS without EO's, once I've used my 2 current tubs up.

Too much other great stuff out there......but I still have 15 ShaveCreams in rotation in my Den, so will not be finishing my 2 Tubs of AOS before 2014 earliest :)

I'm sad to hear about their move away from essential oils. No bueno. Lemon is my favorite too.

I just went to the brand new one here in Indianapolis and they still say essential oils.. I asked the sales guy and he said they were kepping that way just trying to get rid of the parabeens.. go figure... I guess you all can call this one here and aske them to send it to you..:D

They do still say Essential oils on the front of the labels, that is one of my issues. If you look at the ingredients on the back the cream no longer has any mention of oils on the label.

I mean, I know shouting reformulation on this site is like yelling fire in a crowded theater...but considering AoS is my favorite sandalwood cream, I'm not ready to swear it off until I try it. Especially considering that it seems the only person in the thread who has actually tried the reformulated cream felt it performed well...maybe my face isn't as sophisticated as you guys...but if you give me a blind test, I'm not sure i could pick the one with EO's...

What is wrong with all these companies changing formulations of their best selling products. Have they never heard of the 'don't change a winning horse'. Next thing we know, Tabac will be tallow-less and the whole shaving community will go into a revolution, mourning and hunger strike.

This actually makes me want to stock up on the shave soap should they ever decide to do something stupid and reformulate that. Really hate when companies do this to a proven product.

As a side note, I once interviewed with P&G and one thing they do is have dedicated teams working on just reformulation of their products to put a new formulation out every 3 years or so. I think it was patent related, but still....

I will give them a shot when I run through my current reserve as well. The new cream seems to be way weaker in smell than the old formula, and this is one of my favorite parts of any shave.

Sounds like the beginning of a very expensive fear...I mean, why stop with AoS? Reformulation can strike anywhere, anytime. Sleep tight, gentlemen! :)

Now I will say that the sandalwood is not as strong note is the lemon but the lavender is the same..i was told the pairing was new so maybe since the oil is on the front out isn't on the back..who knows

I haven't tries AOS products, but it always saddens me to hear of a company cheapening up their product lines. I guess that time will tell.

That is a bummer to hear. I had to stop by there today for a Royal Shave and I picked up a travel size of the new sandalwood cream to try out later. I agree that the scent has been weakened... let's just hope that the performance hasn't followed suit. For what my humble opinion is worth, I'll let ya guys know it handles for me next week.

So I called AoS today in regards to this thread to ask about the reformulation....without saying this is where I saw it and they said they haven't changed a thing since they started making shave creams. Now that I have joined this thread maybe I'll call back and quote the actual changes and see what they say!

ask them why the es oil isn't listed on the box in the ingredients.. I would love to hear what they say.. I mentioned it to the guy in the local store and he went over to the box read it then sorta walked away...classic

It's a good thing that good soap is not all that hard to make. If one brand decides to lower the quality of their product, there are lots of other great independent producers out there. You can even make your own.

well the soap hasn't changed it is the cream
